FIVE GIFTS. ONE BODY. ONE MISSION.
Christ has given His Church different gifts for a shared purpose. Formation Institute intentionally exposes students to apostolic, prophetic, evangelistic, pastoral, and teaching perspectives throughout the three-year journey. The goal is not to place every student into a category. It is to help students recognize the breadth of Christ’s gifts, grow in the ways they have been gifted, and learn to serve alongside people who see, lead, care, proclaim, and teach differently than they do.
FIVE-FOLD IS NOT A SPECIALIZATION. IT IS THE DNA OF THE SCHOOL.
THE IDEA
DIFFERENT GIFTS. SHARED PURPOSE.
Healthy ministry is bigger than one personality, one leadership style, or one gifting. Some people instinctively build and pioneer. Some discern and listen. Some proclaim the good news and invite others in. Some shepherd, care, and protect. Some bring clarity, understanding, and truth. Formation creates space for students to encounter all five perspectives and ask not only, “How has God gifted me?” but also, “What has God placed in the people around me that I need?”

APOSTOLIC
BUILDING · MULTIPLICATION · MISSION · LEADERSHIP
The apostolic perspective looks outward and forward. It asks: What needs to be built? Where are we being sent? What needs to multiply? How can people and ministries move faithfully into mission? Students encounter a perspective that values pioneering, building, leadership, mission, and multiplication.
PROPHETIC
DISCERNMENT · PRAYER · LISTENING · OBEDIENCE
The prophetic perspective cultivates attentiveness to God. It asks: What is God saying? What needs to be noticed? Where is obedience required? How do we become people who listen before we act? Students learn prayer, discernment, listening, spiritual attentiveness, and obedient response.
EVANGELISTIC
PROCLAMATION · OUTREACH · WITNESS · INVITATION
The evangelistic perspective remembers those who are not yet in the room. It asks: Who needs to hear? How do we communicate the good news clearly? Where is the Church invited to move outward? Students grow in proclamation, outreach, witness, invitation, and a heart for people beyond the existing Church community.
PASTORAL
SHEPHERDING · CARE · UNITY · HEALING
The pastoral perspective pays attention to people. It asks: Who needs care? Who is being overlooked? How do we protect unity? How do we walk faithfully with people through real life? Students learn shepherding, presence, care, relational health, unity, and helping people move toward wholeness.
TEACHING
TRUTH · DISCIPLESHIP · WISDOM · EQUIPPING
The teaching perspective brings clarity and understanding. It asks: What is true? What does Scripture actually say? How can this be understood? How do we equip others to know and live the truth? Students deepen their appreciation for biblical truth, wisdom, discipleship, explanation, and faithful communication of Scripture.

YOU NEED GIFTS OTHER THAN YOUR OWN.
One danger of ministry is assuming that the way we naturally see the world is the way everyone should see it. Five-Fold Formation pushes against that. The builder needs the shepherd. The teacher needs the evangelist. The pioneer needs the person who listens carefully. The pastor needs someone who can challenge movement and mission. Formation should produce more than self-awareness. It should produce humility, collaboration, and appreciation for the Body of Christ.
THE GOAL IS NOT TO MAKE EVERYONE THE SAME. THE GOAL IS TO EQUIP THE CHURCH.

Five-Fold Formation is woven throughout the Formation Institute experience. Students encounter different ministry perspectives through instructors, lectures, podcasts, interviews, conversations, ministry practice, mentoring, case studies, and life together. Together, these perspectives create a richer environment for formation.
IN THE CLASSROOM
Students encounter teachers and leaders who bring different perspectives to Scripture, theology, leadership, mission, and the Church.
IN THE MEDIA
Podcasts, interviews, videos, and conversations bring a wider range of pastors, missionaries, theologians, practitioners, and voices from across the Church.
IN COMMUNITY
Students learn alongside people whose personalities, experiences, strengths, and ministry instincts differ from their own.
IN PRACTICE
Real ministry helps students discover where they naturally thrive and where they need the gifts of others.
FORMATION OVER LABELS
GIFTING IS A BEGINNING. MATURITY IS THE GOAL.
Recognizing gifting can help a student understand how they naturally contribute. But character, humility, biblical faithfulness, love, obedience, and the ability to serve alongside others matter more than a ministry label. A gift may describe part of how someone serves. Formation asks who that person is becoming as they serve.

Formation Institute exists to help students appreciate the breadth of Christ’s gifts, mature in the ways they have been equipped, and learn to faithfully serve alongside the rest of the Body. Five-Fold Formation is not the destination. A healthy, equipped, disciple-making Church is.
